Bookbug is the Scottish Government funded programme which aims to encourage a love of reading and supports the development of language and literacy skills by gifting books to children at key points between birth and five.. The Bookbug Explorer bag gifted to all children aged 3 years to 3 years 11 months is the third bag in the programme – the bags are now on their way to all nurseries/early years settings in Aberdeen City.
The Explorer bag is a wonderful, free resource and provides a perfect opportunity to engage with parents/carers and encourage them to share stories with their child. Research shows that parents/carers are more likely to use the resources in the Explorer bag if practitioners talk about these. Key messages to mention are :
- Its never too early to share books with your child – children love stories and it will help speech and language development
- You need just a few minutes a day to share a book with your child
- Children are never too young to join the library – and this allows free access to a whole range of books and talking books
