Resources for reluctant readers

Aberdeen City Libraries has a wide selection of high interest/ low vocabulary and dyslexia friendly books, picture books for older readers as well as talking books and CD packs (books and CD) to support children and young people who struggle with reading. Specialist publishers e.g. Barrington Stoke, Ransom, Badger and Blake Education, provide a range of fiction and non-fiction titles across all levels with short chapters and illustrations or photographs, aimed at the interest age of the child/ young person but with a lower reading age.

In addition, Barrington Stoke’s dyslexia-friendly books offer:
Tinted pages to reduce visual stress
A special font that helps prevent those with dyslexia confusing letter shapes
Special spacing to help minimise confusing, blurring and switching
Thick paper to make sure words and pictures don’t show through from other pages


Downloadable e-books and e-audiobooks are also available through Aberdeen City Libraries. Search for these resources through the Aberdeen City Libraries catalogue , CRIS or at any Aberdeen City Library.
