LEGION SCOTLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS COMPETITION: Stories of The Sea: Hold the Front Page

A letter and leaflet was sent to you last week regarding Legion Scotland launching our 2015/16 Primary Schools Competition for P5, P6 and P7 pupils across Scotland – Stories of The Sea. We are inviting pupils to investigate, capture and record what life was like at sea for the sailors of the First World War and create newspaper articles about what the sailors and ships were involved in. Can I request that you forward this competition to Primary Schools in your area and encourage their entries?

Pupils from the winning class will be awarded a three day trip to Orkney in June 2016 to visit Scapa Flow – one of the most historic stretches of water and from where the ships sailed to the WWI Battle of Jutland. Selected schools will also see their work included in a travelling exhibition around Scotland.

A leaflet outlining the competition is attached and contained in the letter you have been sent but in summary schools are asked to:

· Research life at sea for men in the Royal Navy during WWI and focus on an event faced by one ship.

· Through looking at different pieces of research, historic and current newspapers and the pupils own imagination write a 500 word newspaper report based on the event.

· The newspaper report should have a headline, by-line, quotes, fact, opinion and one credited photo with a caption.

· Register interest in being part of the competition by 17th November 2015 either on the Legion Scotland website or using the leaflet.

A shortlist of entries will be selected to go forward to an online voting stage where the public will select their top three. From these a winner will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges.

All information that teachers require is available on www.legionscotland.org.uk/schools/stories-of-the-sea/. This holds a copy of our leaflet, full competition entry details, terms and conditions and teaching resources. Schools are required to register their interest to enter by the 17th November 2015 and submit their entries by the 1st March 2016.

This competition is funded by Co-Operative Funeralcare and The Scottish Government.
For any queries about this competition please get in touch and thank you for your support.

Kind regards,

Christie
