UKLA (United Kingdom Literacy Association) thanks Aberdeen teachers

Congratulations to Alice Atkinson (Westpark), Leanne Duncan (Manor Park)  and Elle Haden (Quarryhill)  who this session, along with other teachers in the city, took part in short-listing the 3-6 year old category for the UKLA Book Awards 2017. The unique UKLA Book Awards are the only awards to be judged entirely by teachers.

After much discussion agreeing the short-list, the film they made to showcase the 3-6 shortlists in classrooms was very much appreciated. Alice then travelled to Glasgow on the last day of term to present one of the prizes, but the connection doesn’t stop there!

Elaine Page, DHT at Woodside,  is already busy reading some 7-11 titles for the 2018 award, and Alice is joining the UKLA team again next year to help select the 2019 longlists.   Alice has also agreed to become a UKLA National Council Representative so the close connection within Aberdeen City will certainly continue.

Well done to all those involved, it is a great compliment for the city to be involved in such a high profile way and the ladies themselves have been so inspired they are planning groups within ASGs to further explore innovative ways of using books in the classroom. If anyone is interested in joining them, please contact me and I will happily put you in touch.

A great way to start would be to get your class involved in the latest competition ‘Our Class Loves This Book’ which seeks  imaginative, creative, whole class responses to one of the books on the shortlists chosen for 2017.  As soon as the 2018 entry form is on-line I will email you details of the link – closing date for entries is in February 2018.
